Simple past Tense

The past Simple Tense can be used in several situations, this means that there are several cases where it can be used. In a temporary line we can place it like this,

Completed Action in the Past -

We form this tense when we want to say thing that it happend in the past.
We use this tense in the following cases: to express the idea that an action started and finished.
Examples:
  • I saw a film yesterday
  • I didn't watch a film last month
  • The last year, I traveled to Japan.
  • Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
  • Did you have dinner last night?

A Series of Completed Actions

We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past.

Examples:

  • I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim
  • He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00.

Duration in Past

The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past. A duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions: for two years, for five minutes, all day, all year.

Examples:

  • I lived in Brazil for two years.
  • They didn't stay at the party all the time.
  • We talked on the phone for thirty minutes.
