Oliver twist is the second novel of Charles Dickens. It is the first novel in English language that takes a child as a protagonist.
Oliver Twist calls the attention to his readers on several social bad things of the epoch, as the infantile work or the children's utilization to commit crimes. The author jokes of the hypocrisy of the epoch treating these so serious topics with sarcasm and black humor.

The argument of the book is about a child who his mother die when he is born and he is brought up in a workhouse. His first year are cold and lonely and then he runs away to London where he perceives the poverty, the dirt and the delinquency. But he falls into the hands of Fagin and the terrifying Bill Sykes. They try to turn Oliver into a criminal.
